People who have active gum disease tend to have inflammation of their gums due to plaque and tartar. This inflammation causes the gums and supporting bone to detach from around the teeth creating enlarged gum pockets. Plaque and tartar get trapped in these enlarged pockets because they are unable to be efficiently accessed by a toothbrush and even conventional instruments in the dental office. The trapped plaque and tartar should be removed to prevent further inflammation and destruction of the gums.
